Donate a Kindle – Kindles for Troops (K4T)

Kindles for Troops (K4T) is a terrific program that enables you to donate your pre-owned Kindle reader to a soldier who is deployed overseas.  It is ideal for someone who wants to put their existing Kindle 2 to good use as they upgrade to a newer third-generation Kindle Wi-Fi or Kindle 3G, or for someone who wants to directly donate a Kindle 3 reader.

Note: we launched this program in August 2010 as “Kindle 2s for Troops” or K24T.  However, we renamed and expanded the program in February 2011 to include the new Kindle 3 reader, based on strong demand to donate the newer Kindles to our servicemen and women.

If you want to get started immediately, you should go straight to ourKindle donation form, otherwise, here’s a quick rundown of how it works:

Step 1: Identify if you are Eligible for the Kindle For Troops Donation Program

To be eligible for K4T, you must:

• be a U.S. citizen living in the U.S. (to have your donation qualify for a tax deduction)
• own a Kindle 2 U.S., Kindle 2 International, Kindle 3 Wi-Fi, or Kindle 3 3G  e-reader that is in good working condition with battery charger. (Note: we do not accept Kindle 1s or Kindle DXs).

We do not accept Kindles that are damaged or unusable or non-functioning in any way.  For example, if you have buttons that are not working on the Kindle, a cracked screen, or similar  issues, the Kindle is not eligible.

If you have the original box and documentation, or a case, light, or related accessory, we would ask you provide these as well.

Note: First-generation Kindles and Kindle DXs are not eligible for this program. (Why not?)

Step 2: Complete the Kindle for Troops Donation Form

Submit your contact and Kindle information to us via our Kindle for Troops Donation Form.  Once we receive your information, we will review to ensure there are not any issues with your Kindle device, and then we will email you a shipping address for where you can ship your Kindle.

Step 3: De-register Your Kindle and Erase Any Content

Before you ship your Kindle to us, you need to de-register your device so it is no longer associated with your account.  Amazon.com has instructions on how to de-register your device on the Manage Your Kindle page.  Additionally, you should verify you have erased any of your books from the device.¹

Step 4: Ship your Kindle to E-Books for Troops

Now you just need to ship the Kindle to us! Send it to the address specified in the email that you will receive after we have received and approved your K4T donation form, and once received we will provide you with a receipt that you can use for record of your donation.

Please note, the shipping costs are not covered by the program.

That’s it!  Once we receive your Kindle we will do a final review of its condition, which includes a full factory restore to ensure there is no personally identifiable data on your Kindle, and package it for shipment along with a Kindle case and light donated by M-Edge Accessories in our next delivery to a sponsored unit.

Please note: We understand businesses and individuals may for good reasons want to include other items with their K4T donation that would benefit our military members, but we do not accept or pass-along any third-party items to our sponsored units that fall outside the scope of our K4T program.

How to Get More Information

We will post the status of our donations to our website and identify which units and soldiers have participated in the K4T program.

We are very excited to launch this program, and anticipate it will be very successful.  It is a terrific way for all of us to support our troops who are defending our country overseas.

¹ You can delete books directly from your Kindle by highlighting them one by one on your home screen and pressing the five-way controller to the left. You will see “delete” highlighted, so press the controller to activate the deletion. A dialog box will appear asking if you are sure you want to delete it. Press the controller again to activate the “ok” button. If you have lots of books on your Kindle, a faster way to delete them is to connect the device to a computer via the USB cable, click on the Kindle icon, open the Documents folder, and then delete everything in the Documents folder. Safely eject the Kindle, and when you check the home page it should have no books or content on it.

Programming in Math/Sci

Wired has a great article describing the need for programmers in all fields in The End of Science.  There is a diagram that goes along with it that is also helpful.

Python is my language of choice because it is free, relatively easy to learn, and powerful.

• Python 3.1 is now compatible with the modules I discuss and so I recommend that others learn this version as it is the newest one. Otherwise download Python 2.7.
• Useful 3rd party modules available for free are:
• VPython - For graphing and 3D objects. (necessary if you wish to do the Slope Art Project)
• SAGE - Useful for math classrooms and allows you and your students to maintain a online notebook of previous work and create interactive textbooks.

• How to Think Like a Computer Scientist is what I used to learn Python and it is still my favorite tutorial. It is clear and easy enough for students of all ages.
• Codingbat - Suggested by Michel Paul, "If a student creates an account and does a share to your email, you'll be able to see their code as they finish each exercise.  You can't see their work until it is correct, unfortunately, but it's a really great set of exercises.  They're fun to work through."
• Dive into Python - A little more in depth but still clear and helpful
• Invent with Python - Students love making games and this gives them a great step-by-step journey into this world.
• Mathematics for the Digital Age and Programming in Python is a textbook used by Michel Pauland many other teachers for integrating math and programming.
• PyGame is some extra modules for creating games. 
• The New Boston - YouTube tutorials on Python, C++, Java, and many other languages.
• Turtle and Geometry - Although the commands are in Spanish, Google translates it well. I have a list of the most used Turtle commands.

People and Groups to Connect with:

• Python EDU-SIG is a mailing list covering all sorts of topics regarding Python and Education. Brilliant innovators and never a dull post.
• Infinigons - Allison teaches computer science and math and has great thoughts on both.
• Natural Math and Math Future are the work of the incredible Maria Droujkova who always has new and innovative resources, speakers, and thoughts.

Other Resources for Programming:

• Alice - Brainchild of Randy Pausch et al. Allows students to create their own stories using programming. Boys and girls, young and old love this free software and it has been used successfully in English, History, and Humanities classrooms.
• Arduino - Open source and inexpensive microcontroller. Allows your students to program robots, sensors, etc. The Arduino makes it just as easy for students to learn programming especially if they are very hands on.

Cuando migramos de un sistema (in)operativo a un sistema operativo libre como lo es GNU/Linux, si tenemos una computadora de escritorio o portátil adquirida con una licencia OEM, siempre nos queda el sticker del sistema que vino de fábrica. Muchos lo retiran y en su lugar ponen una calcomanía de algún personaje favorito o con un mensaje, o simplemente no ponen algo ahí.

Sin embargo, ahora que estás usando GNU/Linux tienes la oportunidad de colocar en tu computadora una calcomanía o sticker de esa distro que tienes instalada con la colección Free Software Sticker Book, que no es más que una colección logotipos de casi todas las distribuciones, aplicaciones libres y personas importantes como Linus Torvalds y Richard Stallman.

OFREZCO MIS SERVICIOS COMO PROFESIONAL‏

Un profesional   desempleado despertó una mañana y revisó su bolsillo. Todo lo que le quedaba eran $10. Decidió utilizarlos para comprar comida y esperar así la hora de morir, ya que era demasiado orgulloso como para pedir limosna.

Estaba tan frustrado por no encontrar empleo y no tenía a nadie disponible para ayudarle.

Compró su comida y en cuanto se sentó a comer, un anciano y dos pequeños niños se le acercaron y le pidieron que les diera comida, ya que no habían comido en casi una semana.
El profesionista los miró. Estaban tan flacos que se les notaban los huesos. Sus ojos se les habían hundido. Con el último pedazo de compasión que le quedaba, les dio su comida.

El anciano y los niños oraron para que Dios le diera bendiciones y prosperidad, y le dieron una moneda muy antigua. El joven profesionista les dijo "ustedes necesitan esa oración más que yo".

Sin dinero, sin empleo y sin comida, el joven fue debajo de un puente a descansar y esperar la hora de su muerte. 

 Estaba a punto de quedarse dormido, cuando vio un Viejo periódico en el suelo. Lo levantó, y de repente leyó un anuncio para los que tuvieran monedas antiguas, las llevaran a cierta dirección.
Decidió ir a ese lugar con la moneda Antigua que el anciano le dio. Al llegar al lugar, le dio la moneda al propietario del lugar. El propietario gritó, sacó un gran libro y le mostró al joven graduado una foto.

Era la misma moneda, cuyo valor era de 3 millones de dólares. El joven graduado estaba muy emocionado mientras el propietario le dio una ficha bancaria por los 3 millones. El joven cobró el dinero y se fue en búsqueda del anciano y los niños. 
Para cuando llegó a donde los dejó comiendo, ya no estaban. Le preguntó al dueño de una cantina cercana si los conocía. El dueño le dijo que no los conocía, pero que le habían dejado una nota. Rápidamente abrió la nota pensando que averiguaría donde encontrarlos. 
Esto era lo que la nota decía: "Nos diste todo lo que tenías, y te hemos recompensado con la moneda, firma: Dios Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. 1 Reyes 17:10-16; Mateo 11:28-30.

Glorioso Padre, generoso y amoroso Dios, te oro para que nos bendigas abundantemente a mi familia y a mi. Estimados Señores de Soporte Técnico:


El año pasado cambié de la versión NOVIA 7.0 a la versión ESPOSA 1.0, y he observado que el programa al cabo de un tiempo comenzó con unos procesos inesperados de subrutinas, que luego fueron a más, descargándose un programa oculto denominado HIJO 1.0 que me ocupa muchísimo espacio de disco duro, utiliza recursos importantes, y además enlentece de forma alarmante el Sistema Operativo.

Por otra parte, ESPOSA 1.0 se auto instala como residente en la memoria RAM y se lanza durante el inicio de cualquier aplicación, monitoreando todas las actividades del sistema.

Aplicaciones como: POLAS CON AMIGOS 10.3; NOCHE DE JUERGA 2.5 y FÚTBOL DOMINGUERO 5.0, ya no funcionan normalmente y el sistema se cae cada vez que intento ejecutarlos.

De vez en cuando se lanza un programa oculto (creo que es un virus troyano) denominado SUEGRA 1.0 que aparece cerrando varios puertos de conexiones, y consigue colgar el sistema, o que ESPOSA 1.0 se comporte de manera totalmente impredecible, por ejemplo, dejando de atender a cualquier comando que quiera introducir.

Estoy pensando en volver al programa anterior NOVIA 7.0, pero no he podido desinstalar a ESPOSA 1.0 o al menos mantenerlo minimizado.

REPUESTA DEL SERVICIO TECNICO

Estimado usuario afligido: Este es un motivo de queja muy común entre los usuarios. Se debe, en la mayoría de los casos, a un error básico de concepto. Mucha gente pasa de cualquier versión de Novia X.0 a Esposa 1.0 con la idea de que es solo un programa de Entretenimiento y Utilidades. Sin embargo, Esposa 1.0 es un SISTEMA OPERATIVO COMPLETO, diseñado para controlar TODO el sistema.

Es muy poco probable que usted pueda desinstalar Esposa 1.0 y regresar a cualquier versión de Novia X.0. Es casi imposible desinstalar o eliminar los archivos del programa una vez instalados. Lo mismo pasa con Suegra 1.0 que es una aplicación oculta que se instala en la RAM mientras Esposa 1.0 funciona.

Hay quienes han intentado el formateo a baja densidad, para luego instalar los programas Novia Plus o Trampa 2.0, pero terminan con más problemas que antes, (vea en el Manual, el capítulo “Pago de Pensiones" y "Mantenimiento de Hijos“). Considere la posibilidad de instalar algún software adicional para mejorar el rendimiento de Esposa 1.0. Son especialmente recomendables, como:

PedirPerdon.Exe
Flores 5.0
Joyas 2.3

también puede usar Loquetudigas v9.7, y evite el uso excesivo de la tecla “ESC”

JAMAS instale Secretariaconminifalda 3.3, Amiguitacariñosa 6.9 o Amigotesinoportunos 4.6. Estos programas NO funcionan bajo Esposa 1.0, y muy probablemente, causen daños irreversibles e irreparables al Sistema Operativo.

Si todas las opciones fallan, puede optar por sistemas basados en otras plataformas existentes en el mercado pero bajo su propio riesgo como Celibato 1.0 o Maricón 5.3.
